Keeping Community First

“Keeping Community First” is my continued pledge by engaging and educating the residents on ‘what is working’ and ‘what is not working’ as it relates to the operations of government and empowering the community to be an active change agent.

Andrea Harrison for District 5 County Council

Why Andrea Harrison?

As a life-long resident of Council District 5, I have been raised to actively serve my community and my County.  My service to my community began in 1994 when I noticed my neighborhood playground had the same equipment from my childhood days.  I immediately became involved with my civic association, soon becoming the Vice President, and went on to become the President of the Association.  In my role as President, for four consecutive years, I fought tirelessly for my community and accomplished the construction of a community building in our neighborhood park by obtaining the needed funding through the budget process; and air conditioning for our local elementary school, achieved through negotiations with a local builder.

My passion for serving the District 5 community was so strong that I left my IT defense contractor, went back to school and obtained a degree in Public Policy.  I began working at the County Council under Former Councilmember Dorothy F. Bailey as an Intern, followed by service in the District 5 office as a Constituent Services Liaison under Former Councilmember Marvin F. Wilson.

Seeing my commitment to community, in 2002, upon his election as the District 5 Councilmember, Senator David C. Harrington asked me to continue to serve the District 5 residents as his Deputy Chief of Staff and Policy Director.   During my tenure by “Keeping Community First,” we have engaged, educated and empowered the community by bringing the community into the discussion and decision making of the process and policy of government.

As the District 5 Councilmember, I will:

  • Promote fiscal responsibility;

  • Support full funding for education;

  • Advocate for public safety funding;

  • Ensure Prince George’s General Hospital receives the most efficient and effective solution;

  • Coordinate with State government and other partners to maximize resources in Prince George’s County;

  • Strive for economic development that brings a larger tax base to the County so that adequate resources are available to fund our agencies;

  • Advocate for economic re-development of our established communities;

  • Work diligently with elected officials to bring State and Federal offices into our County,  which will serve as a catalyst for additional businesses and jobs;

  • Urge developers to bring in minority equity partners from our communities; and

  • Work diligently to acquire more environmentally-friendly or green development
